The Hyuga Family Atami Villa is the only building in Japan designed by the German architect Bruno Taut. With its beautiful blend of Western and Japanese interior styles, it is not surprising that it is seen as one of Atami’s most important cultural properties.
Experts on Taut will guide you on a 90-minute tour of the villa, providing insight into the innovative design methods he employed. Originally built for businessman Rihei Hyuga, the villa features a beautifully designed wooden dance room, a Western-style guest room, and a Japanese-style garden. From each area, you can admire views of Sagami Bay below.
Please note that you will need to reserve a spot for one of these tours in advance. You can do this on the website. If you don’t have a reservation, you won’t be able to see the house.
How to get there
You can reach the Hyuga Family Atami Villa from Atami Station on foot in about 8 minutes, though you’ll need to navigate a narrow slope. If you’re arriving on the Izu Tokai Bus bound for Atami Station, be sure to get off at the Kasugacho bus stop and then walk for 3 minutes.
Note that there is no parking avaliable, so you will need to use public transport.
