Only a short train ride from Nagoya, Arimatsu is a small town famed for its tradition of shibori, or tie-dye. This annual festival celebrates the craft.
What happens?
Cloth is twisted, pleated, bound, and stitched before being dipped into dye, producing the soft ripples, rings, and web-like patterns associated with Arimatsu Narumi Shibori.
At the festival, you can see master craftspeople demonstrate traditional techniques, browse exhibitions of both classic and contemporary shibori works, and join hands-on workshops.
There will also be plenty of dyed textiles on sale, from small souvenirs to more elaborate pieces.
How to get there
From Meitetsu Nagoya Station, take the Meitetsu Nagoya Line and get off at Arimatsu Station (around 18 minutes, depending on the type of train). The main tie-dye district is centered around the station.
