Welcome summer with geisha performances in the retro seaside town of Atami, one of our favorite places to visit along the Tōkaidō Shinkansen.
What happens?
As Atami became a popular retreat for domestic tourists, politicians, and business leaders, its geisha community grew alongside the town’s inns and dining venues.
The Atami Summer Geisha Festival celebrates summer with traditional geisha performances at the Atami Geigi Kenban. Expect classical dance and shamisen music, but in a slightly more casual, summery atmosphere.

This year’s festival, marking the 10th edition, takes place August 1–2 from 4 to 8:30 p.m.
Tickets 2026
Tickets cost ¥3,000 per person (includes a food and drink ticket).
This is rather affordable. In our experience, other geisha performances in Kyoto, Tokyo, and elsewhere typically start at around ¥5,000.
How to get there
From Tokyo, the quickest route is to take the Tōkaidō Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Atami Station (approximately 50 minutes) — we suggest purchasing tickets online in advance as this is a popular route.
The Atami Geigi Kenban Kaburenjo Theater is an 18-minute walk from the station. Another option is to take a quick bus ride from Atami Station to Shimizucho bus stop (around 10 minutes), followed by a 1-minute walk. Routes include A31, A35, 11, 15, and 22.
