What happens?
Each autumn, Uji’s Byōdōin Temple opens up after dark to a small number of visitors.
The iconic vermilion hall and fiery maple leaves will be bathed in light. Stroll through the grounds as the air cools and the crowds thin (relatively). Peek inside the Hoshokan Museum for Heian-period treasures like the original phoenix statues and temple bell.
Schedule
There is no night opening this autumn. Byōdōin announced in September 2026 that it is pausing the special night openings, with no date set for their return. One reason it gives is that it has several temple ceremonies coming up, starting with preparations for the completion of the Kannon-dō hall, which is under repair. Check the temple’s announcement for updates.
For reference, the 2025 night opening ran on weekends and public holidays from November 22 to December 7.
Tickets
No tickets are on sale while the night opening is paused. Daytime admission to the grounds remains available as normal.
