Demon Festival on Mount Yoshino in Nara

Free

Dancing demons and fiery rituals. Setsubun takes a wild turn on Nara’s Mount Yoshino with the Demon Festival.

What happens?

Unlike typical Setsubun events that banish demons, Kinpusenji Temple on Mount Yoshino welcomes them with chants of “Good fortune in, demons in too!” before transforming the monsters into “good demons” through sutras, spiritual power, and bean throwing.

The festivities kick off with the Demon Dance of Joy, followed by the dramatic Saitou Daigoma Ku — a massive fire offering ceremony on the temple grounds. The reformed demons then join the crowd in celebration.

Schedule 2025

Here’s the schedule for the day of the main event, February 2:

  • 9:30: Temple monks lead a chanting session.
  • 11:00: Watch as demons are summoned and transformed into “good oni” through prayers and rituals.
  • 12:00: A sacred fire ritual is performed as a symbol of protection and purification.
  • 13:00: Throw beans to drive away evil spirits and invite good fortune. Prizes are up for grabs.

On January 25 and February 1, there is a special Oni-bi Festival Campaign taking place. Stay overnight at a local accommodation and experience the Demon Walk (demons or oni will visit you).

On February 1, there will be lantern displays and a Japanese drum performance at Zaodo Hall from 5 p.m.
