Fujiyoshida isn’t just the gateway to Chūreitō Pagoda. It was once a major textile hub, and it remains well-known for high-quality craftsmanship. This arts festival offers a chance to explore that legacy firsthand.
What happens?
As part of Fuji Textile Week, artists from Japan and abroad put together site-specific installations all over the town of Fujiyoshida, accessible on foot from Shimoyoshida Station (Fuji Excursion). You’ll find works referencing the history of the town as a textile hub, but also creative interpretations that look to the future or draw parallels with other locales. From intriguing video installations to experiments in archiving, there’s a lot to see and ponder.
There will also be various souvenirs to purchase, including wool scarves, socks, and apparel, all made by local brands.
Schedule
Note that the times may vary by venue, with some closing at 5 p.m. and others at 4:30 p.m. Entry to each venue is allowed until 30 minutes before closing.
Fuji Textile Week last took place in 2023.
Tickets
Tickets cost ¥2,000 if purchased in advance, or ¥2,500 on the day. Purchase online.
How to get there
From Shinjuku Station, the easiest way to the venue is to take the Fuji Excursion train and get off at Shimoyoshida Station. This train is direct, but it does get extremely crowded, and it’s a good idea to book a reserved seat ahead of time.
Another option is to take the Azusa Kaiji until Ōtsuki Station and then switch to the local train.
Most of the installations are located about 10 minutes from the station. They are somewhat spread out, but it’s possible to cover everything on foot in one day.
Organizers may cancel events, alter schedules, or change admission requirements without notice. Always check official sites before heading to an event.Add to Calendar
