Hassaku Festival

Every first Sunday of September, Matsunoo Taisha (Matsuo Taisha) in Arashiyama hosts the Hassaku Festival, a tradition dating back over a century.

What happens?

This festival, held during the tail-end of summer, was originally a way to pray for healthy crops and safe households. Today, it’s a mix of ceremony, performance, and late-summer celebration.

At the heart of the festivities is a rare spectacle: mikoshi (portable shrine) bounce down the shrine’s main pathway, shouldered entirely by women. They parade the shrine through the shrine grounds before crossing the river by boat to reach Uchitanimunakata Shrine on Mt. Arashiyama.
