Kiyomizu Temple Seiryu-e Dragon Festival (April)

The Blue Dragon is a guardian deity thought to protect the eastern part of Kyoto. At the Seiryu-e Festival at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, witness a spirited procession celebrating this mythical beast.

What happens?

The Seiryu-e Dragon Festival takes place at the beautiful Kiyomizu-dera Temple.

A massive dragon puppet is carried through the temple grounds at 2 p.m., accompanied by monks, traditional attendants, and taiko drummers. The dragon, hailed as a guardian deity, is believed to drink from the Otowa Waterfall, located beneath the temple’s main hall.
