The Kyoto Nippon Festival is a long-running seasonal art festival staged at a major, yet lesser-known, Kyoto shrine. It’s spectacular, especially in the evenings — so stop by if you are looking for something to do in Kyoto at night.
Pro tip: Based on our experience, we recommend timing your visit around sunset, so you can catch the crystals in the dwindling daylight, and then also see them sparkle in the dark.
What happens?
Held at the historic Kitano Tenmangu Shrine in Kyoto, this popular spring event combines contemporary art, illuminations, and special stage performances.
Highlights 2026
The 2026 festival brings together the award-winning photographer and filmmaker Mika Ninagawa (whose work you may remember seeing at Kobe’s urban aquarium Átoa), future-forward scientist and executive director Hiroaki Miyata, and the multidisciplinary creative team Eternity in a Moment (EiM).
A top event highlight is the large-scale outdoor installation in the shrine’s plum garden. Expect approximately 1,200 handmade crystals suspended in the air: the reflections change with the season and light.

Plum-blossom season is brief, but the garden is beautiful even after the flowers have fallen to the ground; the crystals accentuate both the new leaves and fruit on the trees as the season progresses.
Meanwhile, in a tea-ceremony room up the path, is a spatial art installation centered on flowers: it invites contemplation on the passage of time.
There’s also an immersive non-verbal theater production that will be held in the Fugetsuden Hall, created in collaboration with the renowned dance company DAZZLE.
There will also be merchandise on sale, like decorative cloths, pins, and sweets, which make for nice little souvenirs.
Tickets 2026
Tickets are divided into garden and installation admission, and admission to the immersive theater performances.
Garden and installations
The standard installation ticket grants access to the shrine’s gardens and art spaces, including Mika Ninagawa’s EiM Afterglow. These tickets are valid from February 1 to May 24, 2026, with visiting hours from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and last entry at 8 p.m.
On the international website (in English), tickets cost ¥3,500 for adults and ¥2,000 for children. Admission includes tea and sweets served in the shrine’s beautiful plum garden. If you are okay booking in Japanese, you can go through the domestic website, where you’ll pay ¥2,800 for adults and ¥1,400 for children.
Immersive theater
The immersive theater experience, “Grand Tea Gathering of the Flowered Night”, takes place from March 20 to May 24, 2026, and runs for approximately 60 minutes, three times a day. This experience requires a separate ticket.
Prices start at ¥15,000 for general seating (advance) on the internal website, and ¥11,000 on the domestic site. Note that the theater ticket does also include access to the garden installations.
