Lake Nojiri Fireworks Festival

7:30pm
Free

Located on the border of Nagano and Niigata prefectures, this lesser-known festival of fireworks features a unique setting. What the festival lacks in quantity, it makes up for in quality.

What to expect

The setting for the festival is the beautiful Lake Nojiri. The lake is surrounded by hills and mountains with virtually no light pollution to detract from the show. With a lack of buildings and a natural amphitheater, the boom from the fireworks reverberates around the hills like rolling thunder.

Viewpoints near the shore can be very crowded.

The approximately 2,000 fireworks are launched from two floating platforms, with the illuminated torii gate of Uga Shrine in between. Launches are sporadic, but each one is impressive.

The festival attracts about 30,000 spectators. There are a few yatai stalls selling beer and other snacks, but if you need dinner, you should probably bring it with you.

How to get there

Access to Lake Nojiri is somewhat challenging. If coming by train, you can catch a shuttle bus to and from Kurohime Station on the Kita-Shinano Line on the Shinano Railway. If driving, you may have to park a long way from the lake, so either turn up early or be prepared for a walk of up to 30 minutes each way.

Organizers may cancel events, alter schedules, or change admission requirements without notice. Always check official sites before heading to an event.
