Dance your heart out at the Minami-Mido Bon Odori at Osaka’s Namba Betsuin Temple, also known as Minami-Mido. This is one of Osaka’s largest Bon dance celebrations.
What happens?
The Minami-Mido Bon Dance is back after a long hiatus, promising traditional Japanese folk music and dance at the historic Namba Betsuin Temple. Expect to be entertained by a variety of folk songs and dances from across Japan.
The first 300 attendees each day will receive a fun coupon for use at the food stalls and a bamboo fan. Special guest Tatsuo, a TV and radio personality, will also be there to liven up the event. Official mascot Button-kun, known for loving white rice and hating pork cutlets, will also be present.
History
The Minami-Mido Bon Dance began post-WWII as a way to bring joy and a sense of community to the citizens of Osaka. It honors Shinran Shonin, the founder of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, with the festival dates aligning with his memorial days in August.
Schedule 2024
In 2024, the festival will be held on August 27 and 28. Festivities will take place in the evening, starting at 6 p.m. and concluding at 9:30 p.m.
