What to expect
For a limited time this spring, National Treasures of Japan is bringing nearly 130 of the country’s most revered cultural artifacts under one roof at the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts. From intricate Buddhist sculptures and classical paintings to calligraphy and centuries-old craftsmanship, this exhibition offers a rare chance to see what is considered to be some of Japan’s greatest artistic achievements up close.
The event coincides with Osaka’s World Expo 2025 and marks the grand reopening of the museum after its first full renovation in nearly 90 years. Expect a special focus on treasures with ties to Osaka, giving visitors an in-depth look at the city’s cultural legacy.
Highlights
Here are some major highlights:
- Japanese art masters: Works by Sesshū Tōyō, Kanō Eitoku, Hasegawa Tōhaku, Ogata Kōrin, and more, including paintings, calligraphy, and decorative arts.
- Historical artifacts: Important relics from the Jōmon, Yayoi, and Kofun periods, such as ancient pottery, mirrors, and ceremonial objects.
- Buddhist treasures: Sacred paintings, sculptures, and sutras from temples across Japan.
- Samurai art: Traditional armor, swords, and military-themed paintings.

The exhibition will be held in six phases, with different pieces on display during each period.
Schedule 2025
The exhibition runs from April 26 to June 15, 2025, with daily opening hours from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
On Saturdays, May 4 (Sun.), and May 5 (Mon.), visitors can enjoy extended hours until 7 p.m.
The museum is generally closed on Monday, except for special openings on April 28 and May 5.
Tickets
Admission to the exhibition is ¥2,400 for adults, ¥1,700 for university and high school students, and ¥500 for elementary and junior high school students.
