Usually only view-able from the stone foundation of the former castle keep, the Nijo-jo Castle gardens in Kyoto are being opened to celebrate the new year. This is a rare opportunity to step inside the treasured Japanese-style gardens and enjoy a refreshing stroll through the grounds. The gardens will be open from 8.45am until 5pm but last admission is at 4pm, so try not to leave it too late. Note that also, the Ninomaru Goten palace will be closed during these dates.
