Illuminations at one of the world’s largest aquariums? Say less.
What happens?
After sunset, the event space in front of Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan becomes an outdoor illumination zone where the roof, walls, and surrounding structures are used as the canvas for projections. The entire area is bathed in deep ocean blues, with waves of moving light and short, two-minute light-and-music programs that rotate through themes based on Kaiyukan’s real aquarium tanks.
The main spectacle is the giant marine life silhouettes drifting across the walls. A sixteen-meter whale shark glides past overhead, joined by bottlenose dolphins, harbor seals, and king penguins.
Schedule
From 5 p.m. each day, Kaiyukan’s Marine Mates hosts a brief five-minute lighting ceremony to kick things off.
The aquarium is closed on Wednesday, January 14, and Thursday, January 15, 2026.
Organizers may cancel events, alter schedules, or change admission requirements without notice. Always check official sites before heading to an event.
