Hop aboard the Sagano Romantic Train for an illuminated autumn adventure through some of Kyoto’s most scenic landscapes.
What happens?
The Sagano Romantic Train’s Fantasy Train of Light offers a unique evening experience, illuminating the picturesque autumn foliage along the route. With approximately 1,000 lights highlighting the vibrant leaves and surrounding mountains, passengers are treated to a mesmerizing display of nature and light. This year, enhancements include new spotlights on the Hozu River Bridge, providing stunning views of the upstream and downstream vistas, and upgraded full-color lighting, adding dynamic visuals to the journey.
What is the Sagano Romantic Train?
The Sagano Romantic Train offers a picturesque ride between Saga Torokko Station and Kameoka Torokko Station, with a journey time of 25 minutes. Easily accessible from Kyoto Station via the JR Sagano Line, Saga Torokko Station is a popular starting point, though visitors can also board at Arashiyama Torokko Station, close to major tourist spots like the Bamboo Forest and Jojakko-ji Temple.
For the return trip, you can take the train back or opt for the Hozugawa River Boat Ride (weather permitting), a two-hour scenic journey guided by boatmen along a 16 km course, complete with snacks sold mid-cruise. Alternatively, a quick transfer to JR Umahori Station allows a direct return to Kyoto Station or Saga-Arashiyama.
Schedule
The light-up event will take place from October 12 to December 29, 2024 (except Wednesdays). The illuminations will go from 4:30 p.m. until the last train.
