This one-day summer event is held every year towards the end of July at Ōhama Park in Sakai, Osaka. The celebration centers on a nighttime fish auction, with additional festivities including live music, food stalls, and fireworks.
History
The market traces its roots to the Kamakura period (1185–1333) when Sakai first emerged as a key port city. References from the time mention Sakai’s sea bream and a tradition of holding seasonal fish markets. Over the centuries, Sakai became known not only for commercial shipping but also for seafood distribution.
The night market is closely linked with the Sumiyoshi Festival, held at Osaka’s Sumiyoshi Taisha. On the eve of the festival, a special fish market would be held in Sakai, offering seafood to the sea gods in a symbolic act of devotion.
How to get there
From Osaka Station, take the Osaka Loop Line to Shin-Imamiya, then switch to the Nankai Line and alight at Sakai. From there, it’s a 10-minute walk. Including the walk, the entire journey should take around 45 minutes.
