A kimono is more than meets the eye. This Kyoto exhibition unravels its story through stunning examples of the traditional garment and a detailed look at the painstaking techniques behind the scenes.
What to expect
This exhibition features 19th-century kimonos, handcrafted fabrics, design sketches, and rare template books, alongside works from Kyoto’s vibrant craft scene of the same era. See how designs evolved through the Meiji and Taisho periods, and works by Living National Treasures in Yuzen dyeing, a technique that enables artists to create patterns directly onto silk.
Schedule
The exhibition runs from Saturday, July 19 to Monday, September 15, 2025. Some works will be replaced with others during the exhibition period.
Opening hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with extended hours until 8 p.m. on Fridays. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing.
Note that the museum is closed on Mondays, except for July 21, August 11, and September 15. It will also be closed on July 22 and August 12.
