Here’s how to celebrate Halloween on Shodoshima, the Seto Inland Sea island famed for olives.
What to expect
It may be best known for its olive groves, cycling paths, and contemporary art, but Shodoshima has a more mischievous side. Its maze-like Edo-period streets are home to the Yōkai Museum, founded by local artist Chūhei Yagyū, which showcases over 800 sculptures.
During the Yōkai Halloween Festival (September 13–November 9), visitors in costume get discounted entry. The Yōkai Bar serves a Halloween-only jet-black “Black Lemon Squash”, and the on-site shop sells a limited pink Michishirubee keychain inspired by a local guide spirit.
The highlight is the 3rd Yokai Costume Awards: Kaboso Cup on October 25, named after a trickster otter spirit. Classic figures like tengu and kappa are welcome, but so are original creations!
Entry is free and comes with a participation prize.

How to get there
From Takamatsu Airport, first take the airport limousine and get off at the stop for the Ferry Terminal (around 1 hour). Then, take the ferry headed for Kozushima. After about 35 minutes, get off at Tonosho Port. Then, you’ll need to walk around 25 minutes to the venue or take a bus.
Organizers may cancel events, alter schedules, or change admission requirements without notice. Always check official sites before heading to an event.
