Celebrate winter in true snow country style at the Tōkamachi Snow Festival in Niigata.
What happens?
Tōkamachi in Niigata sees one of the highest snowfall rates in Japan. The Tōkamachi Snow Festival embraces the town’s abundant snowfall rather than fighting it. Festival highlights include snow activities, local food and beverages unique to the area, and magnificent, handmade snow sculptures crafted by local residents, often larger than cars.
The Tōkamachi Snow Festival has been celebrated annually since 1950. Unlike some of the bigger snow festivals, you can expect a more neighborly, small-town atmosphere here.
How to get there
From Tokyo, take the Jōetsu Shinkansen to Echigo-Yuzawa (about 80 minutes). Transfer to the Hokuhoku Line to Tōkamachi Station (about 30 minutes). The event will be held on the grounds of the Nishi Elementary School, a 10-15 minute walk from the station.
Organizers may cancel events, alter schedules, or change admission requirements without notice. Always check official sites before heading to an event.
