Toyooka Theater Festival 2027

– ¥6,000
Hotel Options

Most theater festivals keep you in a theater. This one scatters performances across a whole corner of northern Hyogo — a hot-spring town, a stretch of coast, a highland, and wooden farm-village stages tucked into shrine grounds. Now in its seventh year, it is built to be travelled rather than just attended.

What to expect

The festival covers seven areas of Toyooka City, from the downtown district and its Shōwa-era architecture to the onsen (hot spring) town of Kinosaki, plus neighboring Yabu City and Kami Town — 11 areas in total. Programming runs from ticketed main-stage work to a free fringe of street performances.

The 2026 theme is uzumaku (to swirl), and the idea is that theater, local food, and the region’s own attractions fold into one trip rather than sitting separately.

Schedule

The festival period is September 18–27, 2026, and it takes in a five-day run of public holidays. Some programme dates begin a day earlier, on September 17.

Individual performance times vary by production and venue — check the official programme for the show you want. Fringe programme details are published closer to the festival.

Tickets

Single tickets run from free to ¥6,000 depending on the production. There is also a festival pass, plus supporter and group tickets.

🎫 Booking in English: CloudJoi sells single tickets in English, while the Japanese-language official ticket page covers the full range including passes and tour packages.

How to get there

Toyooka Station is the hub for the whole festival. From Osaka, a limited express takes 2 hours 30 minutes; from Kyoto, the Kinosaki limited express takes 2 hours 20 minutes. Highway buses from Osaka to Toyooka or Kinosaki Onsen take about 3 hours.

From Tokyo, fly to Osaka Itami Airport in about 1 hour, then connect to Tajima Airport in 40 minutes, or continue by train.

Pro tip: because venues are spread over three municipalities, pick one base — Toyooka downtown or Kinosaki Onsen — and build your schedule around it rather than criss-crossing the region.

Note that dates, times, and prices are subject to change, so check the official website before you go.

Organizers may cancel events, alter schedules, or change admission requirements without notice. Always check official sites before heading to an event.
