You’ve heard of Uji, but did you know that around half of Kyoto Prefecture’s tea is grown in the tiny town of Wazuka?
What happens?
Each autumn, Wazuka throws open its doors for the Chagenkyo (“Teatopia”) Festival, the town’s biggest annual celebration of its tea culture.
Expect guided tours through those spectacular tea fields, tastings and sales of teas from Japan and beyond, and plenty of food stalls offering tea-infused dishes and sweets. Oh, and fireworks!
Schedule 2025
The fireworks are scheduled to take place at 5:30 p.m. and last about 20 minutes.
How to get there
From Kyoto Station, it takes around 2 hours to get to the venue, Wazuka Sports Park, and the surrounding areas.
First, take the Kintetsu-Kyoto Line to Shin-Hōsono Station. Walk about 4 minutes to Hōsono Station. Switch to the JR Jouzai Gakkentoshi Line and ride until Kizu Station. At Kizu Station, take the Kansai Line and get off at Kamo Station. Hop on the #65 bus and get off at Wazukanagai Bus Stop, then walk about 11 minutes.
