The Yatori no Shinji Festival is a traditional Shinto ritual held annually at Shimogamo Shrine in Kyoto, one of Japan’s oldest shrines. Taking place on August 6, this event marks the symbolic end of summer in accordance with traditional timelines.
What to expect
During the festival, locals gather to bid farewell to the summer heat, and 60 men gather around Mitarashi Pond inside the shrine. In the center of the pond, around 50 arrow-like talismans are placed. These represent food health for the year to come. At around 7 p.m., things really heat up as the purification ritual comes to an end and the men rush towards the center of the pond to grab an arrow. Note that only 50 men will be able to take hold of the prize, while the others will be left to fight off evil on their own.
Schedule
The festival starts at 6:30 p.m. in the main hall and around the pond of the shrine. At 7 p.m., the arrow collection ceremony around the pond begins.
