At 55m, Akiu Otaki Falls are an impressive sight. Considered one of Japan’s three best waterfalls, these falls on the outskirts of Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture are in the Akiu Onsen area and an easy trip from the city.
There is a viewing deck, a cliffside walkway, and a small shrine near the entrance to the waterfall area. Also, a teahouse is nearby, so snacks and hot drinks are available. The waterfall is appealing in all seasons, but is considered to be most scenic in autumn.
Be sure to wear sensible footwear! The area around the waterfall can be slippery.
