The symbol of Shirahama, Engetsu Island is an uninhabited and secluded island that is known for its unique formation, which includes a full-moon-shaped hole.
Most people come to see the view of the island at sunset as, especially around the spring and autumn equinoxes, the sun aligns with the full-moon-shaped hole in the rock, creating an incredible view and photo opportunity.
The best place to view the island is near the Mifune Ashiyu foot bath. You can either watch it from there, as you soak your feet, or head down towards the platform and get a closer view.
How to get there
It takes 20 minutes on the 105 Sandanbeki Line bus to get to Engetsu Island from Shirahama Station. This journey will cost you ¥340. You can also take the 30 Shirahama Tanabe Line which costs the same amount, but takes 35 minutes in total — with 22 minutes of this journey being a walk.
From Nanki-Shirahama Airport, take the 102 Loop Bus for ¥410. This journey takes 23 minutes.
