Hakoyu is Shuzenji’s main sento (public bathhouse), the only one to be rebuilt from the seven that once lined the street. With a legendary history and a cypress-scented bath, it offers visitors the perfect place to unwind.

What’s Hakoyu?

Hakoyu is a symbol of Shuzenji’s history. Not only is it the last remaining proper sento in the town, but it is also said that Minamoto no Yoriie, the second shogun of the Kamakura shogunate, bathed here. He was even attacked in 1024 while bathing.

The sento features one main indoor bath with a subtle cypress scent. On bright days, light streams through the skylight, creating the ultimate Zen atmosphere.
