One of the most picturesque places in Okinawa, Kabira Bay is known for its white sands and bright blue waters.
Although the ocean looks dreamy to swim in, swimming actually isn’t allowed due to black-pearl cultivation. Instead, visitors can enjoy a ride on a glass-bottomed boat (for ¥1,000) and admire the sea creatures and scenic views of the bay. You are also free to take off your shoes and feel the warm sand between your toes.
After visiting the bay, you can take a stroll around the area. There are a few small souvenir shops and places to eat. Also, make sure to stop by the Kabira Kannon Temple.
If you’re the adventurous type, you can try stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), canoeing, or snorkeling. Many tours, like this one, take you to visit the famous “Blue Bay”.
How to get there
The easiest way to get to Kabira Bay is by car — as it only takes 30 minutes from the main city. Although also accessible by bus, the journey takes slightly longer at 45 minutes (but only costs ¥720).
The bus schedule is irregular, so you need to double-check timings. For instance, only 11 buses per day go to the bay. It is also possible to take a taxi from the city — expect to pay anywhere from ¥3,500.
