Worship at the altar of Camellia sinensis? Matsue’s Kashima Tea should be on your radar.
Background
Founded in 1891, Kashima Tea is a long-established tea shop located not far from Matsue Castle. This area — Nishichamachi or “western tea town” — is known for its deep tea heritage.
In fact, Matsue is regarded as one of the top three cities for wagashi or traditional Japanese sweets consumed with tea, alongside Kyoto and Kanazawa. Furthermore, the matcha consumption rate in this town is believed to be five times the national average!
What to expect at Kashima Tea
Kashima Tea is led by Kosuke Kashima, the only 10th-degree tea master in the San’in region (Shimane and Tottori). This rank, awarded at Japan’s National Tea Judging Skill Competition, is the highest in the field and recognizes exceptional ability to evaluate tea leaves by sight, aroma, and taste — so you know you’re getting the very best.
Kashima Tea sells tea from around Japan, including favorite regions like Uji and Yame. For a truly local souvenir, you’ll also find Shimane-grown teas difficult to purchase elsewhere.
Looking to convert a coffee-head? Consider the beautifully packaged single-serve tea bags. There’s classic sencha, but also inventive blends with additions like locally grown ginger and French lavender. Kashima has also curated blends for different times of day, or to pair with activities — to give you a boost while studying, after meals, and more.

The shop also operates a tea stand (reservation required) and sells its blends online.
