For a change of scenery from your Atami beachside break, hike a little bit up the hill and escape to this very spiritual spot. Kinomiya Shrine is home to Honshu’s largest tree, a 2,000-year-old camphor (Ookusu).
This hardy tree has survived lightening strikes and being chopped down for wood. Local legend has it that walking round this tree one time extends your life by a year—but watch out for the falling black camphor berries!
After getting your spiritual fix, you can stop for a matcha tea and wagashi set at the outdoor cafe next to the ancient tree (¥600–¥900).
