Matsunoo Taisha, also called Matsuo Taisha, is located in Kyoto’s Arashiyama district. It is one of the city’s oldest Shinto shrines, founded in 701.
What to expect
The shrine is famous for its connection to sake and miso brewing, with many brewers visiting to pray for quality production. The shrine’s spacious grounds include striking vermilion buildings, statues believed to bring good fortune, and gardens designed by a renowned landscape architect.
How to get there
The shrine is about 30 to 45 minutes away from Kyoto Station, depending on the route.
By bus
The 28 City Bus departs every 20 minutes. Take the bus to Matsuo Taisha-mae stop and walk for about 4 minutes. The total journey time is around 40 minutes.
By subway
Taking the subway requires riding a few different trains, but the whole journey takes around 30 minutes.
First, take the Karasuma Line headed for Kokusaikaikan. After a couple of stops, get off at Shijō Station and transfer to the Hankyu-Kyoto Line for Osaka-Umeda. At Katsura Station, switch to the Hankyu-Arashiyama line for Arashiyama and get off at Matsuo-Taisha Station. From there, it’s a 4-minute walk.
