Unlike the big-daddy fish market of Toyosu in Tokyo or Shiogama Wholesale Seafood Market nearer by, the Matsushima Fish Market is not a working fish market full of auctions and pallets of fresh seafood. It is, however, an excellent place to get lunch, stock up on picnic snacks, or pick up some fresh seafood to take home and cook yourself.
Tucked away at the back of the parking lot near the Date Masamune Historical Museum, the Matsushima Fish Market offers Miyagi and Sanriku seafood – the oyster burgers, grilled oysters and sushi are said to be particularly good. You can also get ramen, if fish isn’t your thing. There are two sit-down dining areas if you want to eat on-site, or simply pick up your order and risk the seagulls in the various nearby parks.
