Nanzoin Temple is home to the world’s largest reclining Buddha statue, and is a key stop on the “Sasaguri 88” pilgrimage route.

Although its original home was on Mount Koya in Wakayama, the temple was relocated to Sasaguri in the late 1880s. This was due to threats from anti-Buddhist authorities, as well as efforts by local residents to preserve it.
Since its relocation, the temple has grown into a complex with various smaller shrines, statues, caves, and ponds. The main attraction for many visitors is the massive bronze reclining Buddha, which measures 41 meters in length and 11 meters in height.

Its lush surroundings, including bamboo groves, make Nanzoin Temple a peaceful and beautiful spot to enjoy the autumn foliage.
Rules
As Nanzoin Temple is a sacred place and a center for spiritual practices, there are rules which visitors should follow. Those wearing shorts above the knee, mini skirts, and camisoles will not be allowed in. Tattoos must also be covered up.
In addition to this, photography is prohibited in many areas. The use of selfie sticks, stabilizers, and tripods is also banned.
