This gorgeous shrine to Hachiman, the Shinto god of war, was constructed by Date Masamune, the one-eyed dragon, first daimyo of Sendai Domain. It is a National Treasure of Japan, and a must-see for any visitors to the city.
Recently restored to its original jewel-like colors, the shrine was built in 1607. The shrine complex consists of a main hall and an offering hall. Black lacquer and gold leaf are everywhere in evidence, making the shrine complex a feast for the eyes.
