The Sandanbeki Cliffs are 60-meter-high cliffs in Shirahama, which span approximately 2 km. They make up part of the Yoshino-Kumano National Park.
Many people simply go to see the cliffs from the top, but you can also pay to take the elevator down 36 meters and explore the cave below. Admission is ¥1,500 for adults and ¥750 for elementary-school students.
Notable features of the cave include a 200-meter pathway that winds through the dark, and a blowhole that shoots water into the air as the tide rolls in. There are also a few sacred sites and the chance to learn more about the Heian period through different artifacts. The cave has historical importance as the hiding site for boats belonging to the Kumano navy during the Genpei War.
After going down to the cave, make the most of the free ashiyu foot bath (open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) — which offers an incredible view of the cliffs. You can also pray and lock your love at the love site, as well as sip some coffee or matcha at the café.
How to get there
From Shirahama Station, take the 12 Shirahama Tanabe Line or 30 Shirahama Tanabe Line to Nonbirejji. The journey takes 24 minutes and costs ¥480. Alternatively, should you be traveling from Nanki-Shirahama Airport, take the 102 Loop-bus for ¥280 to Nonbirejji. The journey only takes 7 minutes.
