About 30 minutes from central Osaka, Sayama Pond offers a peaceful retreat. It is one of the most underrated cherry blossom spots in southern Osaka.
In spring, the 3km loop around the pond transforms into a sakura tunnel, with two distinct cherry blossom varieties. The Somei-yoshino, Japan’s classic cherry blossom, covers the path in delicate pale pink petals, while the rarer koshinohigan adds a splash of vivid pink, blooming slightly earlier. As the petals fall, they create a stunning mirror effect on the water’s surface, making this a prime spot for photography and hanami.
Built in the 7th century, Sayama Pond is Japan’s oldest manmade reservoir, originally constructed for irrigation and later improved by historical figures like Gyoki and Chogen, who also worked on Nara’s Great Buddha Hall.
Beyond cherry blossoms, Sayama Pond is a serene spot for walking, cycling, and birdwatching. It’s open 24 hours.
