A Buddhist temple in the heart of Shuzenji, known for its historical significance.

What is Shuzenji Temple?

This hilltop temple was founded in 807 by Kōbō Daishi (Kūkai), the founder of Shingon Buddhism. It was later rebuilt by Hojo Soun, the old ruler of the Izu Province, after being partly burnt down in 1409. During the Kamakura period, it became the center of a power struggle involving Minamoto Yoritomo and Minamoto no Yoriie.

In the autumn season, beautiful red and orange leaves perfectly frame the temple.
