Matcha on tap, anyone? With its futuristic, minimalist vibe, 2050 Coffee offers a cool new way to enjoy matcha (and, of course, coffee) in the traditional city of Kyoto.

What’s 2050 Coffee?

2050 is more than a coffee shop. It’s an initiative to think about how the coffee industry is changing and a response to the “2050 coffee problem”. What is that problem? Well, with climate change and rising consumption, by 2050 is might be difficult to enjoy coffee at the same price point and quality as we do now.

With this goal in mind, 2050 Coffee has created a space which considers such factors. For example, the in-store technology, i.e. the tap coffee, is not just a cool feature, it actually ensures consistent quality and speed with every cup. Plus, the café promises to purchase coffee beans at a fair price to allow producers long-term profits.

Notably, because they aim to foster a coffee culture through education and technology, don’t expect a “cheap” coffee here. You are paying towards such initiatives. Prices range from ¥600 to ¥1,000, depending on which blend you get.

Of course, we came for the matcha on tap, something you see rarely, if not at all. It had a nice umami and slight bitter taste. If coffee or matcha isn’t your thing, they have some other options including spiced soda, tea, kombucha, and apple juice.
