Finding vegan food, never mind gluten-free food, is challenging in Japan. Yet, to our surprise, while wandering through Janjan Yokocho — a little off the beaten path — we discovered one of the area’s best kept secrets.
Shinsekai Paprika Shokudo serves vegan and gluten-free versions of Osaka’s famous dishes, including takoyaki and kushikatsu. With its welcoming, laid-back atmsophere, it offers an escape from the chaotic main street and a chance to explore unique flavors and tastes.
This restaurant has an online ordering system that’s easy to navigate (and can be translated to English). On this digital menu, you’ll find an interesting variety of vegan-friendly kushikatsu, with standouts including avocado, plant-based meat, and vegan cheese. Expect to pay between ¥140 to ¥370 per kushikatsu.

In addition to kushikatsu, you can sample some vegan and gluten-free takoyaki (for ¥740). These imitation takoyaki really taste like the real deal — with the same bursts of flavor and texture. If you’re after something else, there’s also vegan ramen and rice dishes available.
Wash down your vegan food with a cold organic lemon sour (¥580), a beer or a soft drink. If you’re still hungry, there are a few dessert options too, including kakigori (shaved ice) and coconut caramel popcorn. Prices range from ¥290 to ¥496.
