Suggested Activity
Make Maki-e Urushi Lacquer Art in Kyoto
Learn the art of maki-e, one of Japan's traditional decoration methods applied to lacquerware. This workshop — taught in English — is ideal for anyone who wants to learn more about Japanese art and make their own special souvenirs.
- 11:00: A giant 10-meter-tall tower on wheels is towed by a rope through the streets by residents. The tower is taller than the power lines, so great care is required.
- 19:00: An after-dark procession with taiko drums accompanying a parade of impressive dome-like structures strewn with lanterns.
