Modern music meets traditional at this Bon Odori dance just north of Kyoto Station.
What happens?
As part of the Shimogyo and Kyoto Station Summer Festival, the Honganji Temple Bon Dance sees around 10,000 revelers peruse 40 food and drink stalls and dance together in a circle. As well as traditional music, you may perk up at songs featured in popular anime.
Doors open at 4 p.m., performances start at 5 p.m., and the Bon Odori kicks off at 6 p.m. till 8:40 p.m.
How to get there
The festival is held in the north parking lot of Nishi Honganji Temple. You can take a short 10-minute bus ride from Kyoto Station or a 20-minute walk.
