Miyajima Oyster Festival

Hiroshima Prefecture is famed throughout Japan for its oyster industry, so Miyajima (Itsukushima) with its strong connection to oyster farming is the perfect place for such an event.

What happens?

From a Cheapo angle, the festival offers good value with oysters selling from ¥100 each — much cheaper than the crazy prices paid for the same product in Tokyo. As if the oysters alone weren’t enough, there will also be a stage with taiko drumming entertainment.

Schedule

The festival generally takes place on the second Saturday and Sunday of February. However, keep in mind that the festival may be canceled in case of poor oyster growth, as it was in 2024.

Suggested Activity
Learn To Play the Koto, in Kyoto
Immerse yourself in traditional Japanese culture by learning how to play the koto — Japan's national instrument. In this workshop, you'll learn from a professional koto instructor, in a beautiful wooden house that dates back over 100 years.

How to get there

The festival takes place in front of Miyajima Pier.

Organizers may cancel events, alter schedules, or change admission requirements without notice. Always check official sites before heading to an event.
