Feel the pulse of Iwate at the Morioka Sansa Odori Festival, a major festival in Japan’s northeastern Tohoku region.
What happens?
The Morioka Sansa Odori Festival in Iwate is one of the liveliest festivals in Tohoku. Dancers clad in vibrant costumes parade through central Morioka, accompanied by the rhythmic beats of taiko drums, flutes, and chants.
This festival is renowned for its spectacular taiko drumming performances. Festival-goers are encouraged to join in, too.
Beyond the main parade, the city hosts various Sansa Odori performances.
History
The Sansa Odori Festival has deep roots in Morioka’s history, celebrating local folklore and traditions. The festival’s name, “Sansa”, is said to derive from an ancient chant used to ward off demons. Over time, it has evolved into a grand celebration of community spirit.
How to get there
From Tokyo, take the Tohoku Shinkansen to Morioka Station. The main parade and dance venue is about 20 minutes on foot from the station in Morioka City. Head to Chuōdōri street, located in front of the Prefectural Government Building.
