This December, Heian Shrine in Kyoto is working in collaboration with the art collective NAKED to create a bright experience for those wanting to worship at night.

What happens?

The shrine’s most important properties, including the main shrine, Otenmon Gate, and Japanese garden, will be covered with digital art. There will also be projection mapping and the opportunity to walk down the “corridor of light”, an area that is normally closed off to the public.

You can even participate in Light Hand Wash, an interactive art experience where colorful lights project onto your hands and mouth — cleansing them before visiting the shrine.

Suggested Activity
Go Bar Hopping in Osaka [With Full Dinner]
Spend an evening exploring the bars in Osaka's popular nightlife district of Namba. Sample tasty Japanese pub-style food, and wash it down with your choice of drinks, from sake to umeshu and beer — all in the company of a knowledgeable guide!

Each area is inspired by the Four Divine Beasts, the ancient guardian creatures believed to protect Kyoto.

Highlights 2025

A major attraction this year is the Daigokuden, which has just undergone an eighteen-month-long restoration. Even half-wrapped in scaffolding until 22 December, it’s still an incredible sight.

Note: During this period, one NAKED Distance Lantern (usually ¥500) is loaned free.

Schedule 2025

There are two phases. The first goes from December 19 to 30, while the second goes from January 6 to 18.

Last entry is at 8:50 p.m., although it may close earlier on crowded evenings.
