The 2026 Shirakawa-go Winter Light-up has been announced.
What happens?
The traditional houses to Shirakawago come alive under the lights at this illumination event.
It will go ahead this year but reservations will be required to enter the village during the evening. Daytime visits on event days will be restricted to certain times.
Where is Shirakawago?
Shirakawago is a picturesque village in Gifu Prefecture. It is known for its traditional, triangle-shaped houses known as gasshō-zukuri.
When?
There will be four light-ups from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.:
- January 12, January 18, and January 25
- February 1
Entry
The only way to see the light-up will be to stay overnight (lottery system), join a local bus tour, with a tour from a travel agency — we recommend this Willer tour from Tokyo — or reserve a parking space in advance.
Organizers may cancel events, alter schedules, or change admission requirements without notice. Always check official sites before heading to an event.
