Ōura Cathedral is the oldest surviving Christian Church in all of Japan. Its distinct gothic-European architecture stands out from other religious buildings in Nagasaki, making it one of the most visited spots in the area. Ōura Cathedral, founded in 1864 by French priests, was initially built for the foreign community in Nagasaki. During the period when Christianity was banned in Japan, it quickly became a sanctuary for hidden Christian leaders and missionaries. The church was later dedicated to the 26 Catholics martyred in 1597. Today, it is recognized as a National Treasure. How to get to Ōura Cathedral There are a few different ways to get to Ōura Cathedral. The easiest and cheapest way, for , is to take the bus. From Nagasaki Station, you can either take the Line 60 bus to Oura Cathedral Bus stop or Line 30 or 40 to Clover Garden bus stop. From both of these stops, it is a 5-minute walk. For those coming by tram from Nagasaki Station, you'll need to first jump onto the Nagasaki Denki No.1 heading towards Sofukuji Temple. After 10 minutes, you will need to switch at Shinchi Chinatown Station and take the Denki No.5 to Ishinbashi, which will take you to the Oura Cathedral Tram stop. From there, it is a 5-minute walk.
