Glover Garden is located on the southern slope of a mountain in Nagasaki. It is home to historical residences and flower gardens. What's Glover Garden? As part of the "foreign settlement" that began in the mid-to-late 1850s, many foreign merchants moved to the area. Glover Gardens stands as both a historical and physical symbol of this period, as it was home to many of these foreign merchants. The most notable is the Scottish merchant Thomas Glover. In addition to the greenery and flowers, you can enjoy an elevated view of Nagasaki and Mount Inasa in the distance. You can also explore nine different traditional buildings, including the Former Glover House. Distinct in their architecture, three of these buildings are designated National Important Cultural Properties. There are other sites of interest, such as stones marking the Foreign Settlement Boundaries and a statue of Tamaki Miura in her famous role as Madame Butterfly. For a deeper understanding of the gardens' history, we recommend participating in one of the free park tours. Afterward, you can try on period costumes at the Retro Costume Museum or explore the Nagasaki Traditional Performing Arts Center. If you're feeling peckish, stop by the Free Tei Coffee Room or Glover Café. Before leaving, be sure to visit the Garden Shop for some exclusive souvenirs.
