Osaka has enough neon to be seen from space (nearly), but around Christmas and New Year, the city's winter illuminations steal the show. Nothing says Christmas in Japan like some impressive winter illuminations. Osaka pushes the boat out for the festive season and has millions of lights to view. Whether you want a full-on date night or just a quick stroll for an evening, there are plenty of great spots. 1. Osaka Castle Illuminage The Illuminage festival will dazzle with extravagant light displays in both Osaka and neighboring Kobe. The historical Osaka Castle will put on a grand show, and Kobe goes big with a sprawling light-up just outside of the city. Tickets start from 2. Universal Studios Japan: Universal Christmas Universal Studios Japan decks out the park from November 19, 2025, to January 4, 2026 for Universal Christmas, with new shows, festive eats, and plenty of photo ops. The main event, Light Up the Night: Christmas Celebration, mixes fireworks, projection mapping, and live performances in a snowy, music-filled finale. In the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, the Hogwarts Magical Night – Winter Magic show lights up the castle with owls, snowmen, and Christmas spells. The Christmas Food Festival (Nov 4–Jan 4) lines the park with markets selling hot soups, mulled wine, and character-themed dishes. Other highlights include the rock concert-style Power of Rock: Holidays are Rockin’, a Minions Jingle Bello Meet & Greet, and a Universal Wonderland dance show where kids can join in. Pro tip: Skip the queues and get your USJ tickets in advance. 3. & 4. Osaka Festival of Lights Osaka's big winter illuminations are split into two broad events under the "Festival of Lights" umbrella: Midōsuji Illumination and Osaka Hikari Renaissance. There are also many more fun things to see during the event period. 3. Midōsuji Illumination Combined with the Hikari Renaissance (below) to form the Festival of Lights, the Midōsuji Illumination is one of the most popular in Japan. It is now officially the street with the most illuminated trees, stretching for 4km between the intersections of Ōebashi-Kitazume (Ōebashi Bridge North) and Hanshin-mae. Making the most of the ginkgo trees, the display runs from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. until December 31. 4. Osaka Hikari Renaissance The Nakanoshima Street Illumination features zelkova trees lit up in blue and white. There are also two shorter-term events that run from December 14 to December 25, including projection mapping against Osaka Central City Public Hall and the Marche of Light, a cluster of stalls and food trucks offering visitors gourmet eats and Christmas shopping. 5. teamLab Botanical Garden From October 31 to November 23, the art collective teamLab turns Nagai Park into a living lightscape for Life is Flickering Light Floating in the Dark – Cosmos. Step close and the cosmos flowers shimmer brighter, pulsing with sound that ripples through the garden. As November deepens, pink muhly grass and bald cypress trees flare into color. It’s all part of the Festival of the Lights. 6. Umeda Sky Building Christmas A 25-meter tree wrapped in 130,000 LED lights takes center stage at Osaka’s Umeda Sky Building Christmas 2025, running from November 14 to December 25. The tree’s light show shifts with the calendar -- artist collaborations in November give way to a circus-themed performance in December, complete with color-changing lights and music. The plaza below, Wonder Square, transforms into a glowing mini-fairground under the theme “The Circus of Light – A Fantastical Circus Sparkling in the Night Sky”. Surrounding the tree, the Wonder Christmas Marche aims to offer a pocket of Europe in Osaka, with wooden huts selling ornaments, candles, and handmade crafts, plus cozy favorites like mulled wine and hot soup. 7. Grand Wish Christmas Grand Front Osaka will put on a special illumination complete with a 10-meter-tall, kaleidoscope-inspired Christmas tree for this year’s theme, “Winter Prism”. There will also be around 250,000 golden LED lights in Umekita Square and in front of JR Osaka Station, and other themed things to do from November 6 to December 25. 8. Umekita Champagne Gold Illumination Trying to make sustainable choices but can’t resist a bit of sparkle? Osaka’s Umekita district has you covered with its Champagne Gold Illumination, running from November 6 to February 28, 2026. Nearly 480,000 champagne-gold LEDs drape the trees, plazas, and walkways linking Grand Front Osaka and Grand Green Osaka, creating a soft golden tunnel that stretches across the north side of Osaka Station. The illuminations run entirely on renewable energy and use energy-saving LEDs. This year’s display reaches farther than ever, extending through Umekita Green Place and lighting up 140 trees -- that's almost twice as many as last year, for those counting. The lights flick on at 5 p.m. every evening and stay on until midnight. 9. Osaka Christmas Market Head for the Umeda Sky Building for some festive food and plenty of mulled wine at Osaka’s German Christmas Market. Combining stalls with plenty of lights, you’ll have as much to look at as you will to consider buying, as well as an antique merry-go-round and a series of very impressive trees. Modeled after a traditional German market, it features rows of wooden stalls piled high with ornaments, handmade gifts, and winter treats. The market opens at 4 p.m. on November 28 and runs through the season, with last orders at 8:30 p.m. 10. Namba Hikaritabi The Namba area of Osaka will be lit up with a whopping 1 million LED lights, and a whole host of fantastic activities will be available. Illuminations start on November 7 and most go on until February 16, 2026. In Namba Parks, there will be a waterfall of light. This year, there will also be an installation made from upcycled flowers, underscoring the event’s message of sustainability and appreciating fleeting beauty.
