The largest of the three remaining vine-bridges slung across the valley, this is an incredible sight to behold (and we don't say that lightly). Used by the fleeing Heike clan to escape, the bridges could be cut down easily to prevent enemies following them into the forests. The 45m bridge is now reinforced with steel so no need to worry about anyone doing the same to you. The bridge is visited by plenty of tourist buses throughout the day, so try to arrive earlier if you want to beat the crowds - or wait them out, it tends to be a rush, then lull - rinse and repeat. Nearby you'll find small food stands and the Biwa waterfall, as well as a path leading down to the water - a popular swimming spot in Summer (we definitely recommend taking a dip and swimming beneath the bridge for a very different view). The bridge has an entry fee of which goes towards maintenance and is open from 7am to 6.30pm.
