Yamaguchi City was modelled after Kyoto, and so it’s no surprise it has a similar festival.
When the Yasaka shrine was brought from Kyoto and the spirit of the deity implanted during the Kanjo ceremony, the Yamaguchi Yasaka shrine was formed.
What happens?
One of the main attractions of the festival is the Dance of the Heron, featuring dancers wearing heron costumes. This elegant dance, recognized as a Folk Cultural Property, marks the beginning of the celebration. There is a large dance performance involving the residents of the city, and a mikoshi (portable shrine) procession.

Schedule
The festival takes place on the same three days every year: July 20, 24, and 27. The Dance of the Heron is on July 20 at Yasaka Shrine (6:30 p.m.). The shrine procession sets off from Yasaka Shrine at 7 p.m. on July 20 and returns from Otabisho shrine on July 27. The Citizens’ Dance, where folks parade down the local shopping street, will be on July 24 in the evening.
How to get there
Yasaka Shrine is a 25-minute walk from Yamaguchi Station and a 15-minute walk from Kami-Yamaguchi Station.
