Sip, savor, and sample over 100 varieties of umeshu (plum wine) at the Japan Umeshu Festa, set against the picturesque backdrop of Kyoto’s Kitano Tenmangu Shrine.
What to expect
From November 21 to 24, 2024, head to the scenic Kitano Tenmangu Shrine in Kyoto for the Japan Umeshu Festa. This is your chance to try over 100 types of umeshu from distilleries across Japan, including gold, silver, and bronze-winning varieties. You’ll also get a shot at exclusive tastings, including the rare Dassai umeshu, and discover food pairings that bring out the best in each wine.
The event also includes limited-edition merchandise, from sturdy tote bags to stylish tumblers and shot glasses.
Tickets
Tickets are available online for ¥3,000 in advance, which includes 30 “umesen” coins to taste various types of umeshu. Umeshu cups will set you back anywhere from 1 to 7 umesen, depending on the quality and vintage. The price is the same for day-of tickets but includes only 25 coins, so we’d recommend buying advance tickets if you can.
Entry includes access to the beautiful Momiji-en garden at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine.
Note that children are welcome, though there’s a charge for entry to the Momiji-en garden (¥1,200).
How to get there
The event is held at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, located in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto. The shrine is easily accessible by bus from Kyoto Station or via a short walk from Kitano-Hakubaichō Station, Tōjiin Station, or Emmachi Station.
