Watch as ancient traditions unfold with sumo, crow-mimicking rituals, and chrysanthemum ceremonies at Kamigamo Shrine.
What happens?
On September 9, Kamigamo Shrine hosts one of its most unique events: the Karasuzumo Wrestling and Choyo Ritual. The day begins with the Choyo Ritual, where Shinto priests offer chrysanthemums, symbolizing longevity and protection, to the shrine’s deity.
Following this, the Karasuzumo wrestling takes center stage as neighborhood children compete in sumo bouts to entertain the deity, all while men dressed as crows perform ancient rituals.
The event concludes with a ceremonial serving of chrysanthemum sake, believed to bring good fortune.
